When it comes to briefings, our question time and again is who the target group for the planned marketing campaign is: end users, channel partners, IT managers or - and this is where it gets tricky - IT decision-makers. Not those who use the IT products to be advertised, but those who make the decision to buy a product. And who are these IT decision-makers? Purchasing? The management? Or even the executive board of a company? Far from it. In most companies, especially in medium-sized businesses, the IT administrators decide what to buy.

When the channel is a dead end

At the end of 2014, we conducted a large survey among German IT administrators and network managers on behalf of a customer. More than 2,000 participants took part in the survey and thus achieved an extremely high response rate.

The sometimes astonishing results show not only that most IT administrators in their small and medium-sized companies are the decision-makers when it comes to purchasing IT equipment, but also that they have made this decision without the IT channel, i.e. resellers and system houses, and do not purchase there.

In the process of their investment decision, IT decision-makers in companies inform themselves on the Internet and also buy the network equipment for their companies there.
